Escondido is only 10 miles North of Del Mar, and it has many dog friendly trails, events and restaurants.Check out “Cruisin” Grand on Friday nights on Grand Avenue in Escondido – classic cars on display,
antique shops and unique restaurants.
Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve in Escondido allows dog on leash, they have a botanical trail map and offer guided hikes too. Daley Ranch in Escondido offers 20 miles of trail and dogs are allowed on-leash. Horses and mountain bikes are allowed too so beware of them on the trail. Horses are not allowed on Sundays so this may be the best day to take your dog.
Daley Ranch is full of wildlife to view at every turn. This includes Coyotes so this may not be the best place to hike with a small dog. Relax at the end of the day at the Encinitas Ale House. Dogs allowed on leash at the front of the restaurant.

Del Mar dog beach is open for off-leash dog fun from Labor Day to June 14. Winter is a great time to go when the temperatures are still mild and the beach traffic is minimal.
The Solana Beach Do It Yourself Dog Wash is very near Del Mar Dog Beach, and you can drop in and wash the sand off your happy, tired beach dog for about $15.
After the beach stop by Dexter's Deli, a healthy pet food store, to pick up all natural treats and unique toys for your dog before you head to Solana Beach for shopping and lunch.
Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach is only a few miles away, and it's a great place to shop for holiday gifts with many dog friendly stores and restaurants. They also have a Farmer’s Market on Sundays with live jazz and al fresco dining.
Hotel Indigo in Del Mar is one of my favorite dog friendly hotels. Kamp Kanine in Encinitas offers a great day care option if you need it. They have van service, 8 large play yards, and they are cage free!
The Los Penaquitos Canyon Preserve is a 4,000 acre system of trails for hiking, and dogs are allowed on leash. It has a mix of terrain and many shaded trails. This is about a 20 minute drive East on Hwy 56 from Del Mar.
The San Onofre Beach Bluff Trails (1 & 6) allow dogs on leash. This is an interesting hike with views of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONG) and the ocean. This trail is about 40 minutes North off of I-5.
